In 2019, PiCCA was awarded an Australian Aid Friendship Grant to continue working with the Hako Women’s Collective (HWC) to deliver an Agricultural Hub and Training Activity in the north of Buka Island in the Autonomous Region of Bougainville.
The project delivered training in modern agricultural methods (such as crop rotation, seed selection, crop inter-planting, composting, efficient water use, soil replenishment) and developed a rice mill to enhance sustainable food security, diversity, nutrition, yields and income for the community.
Women, young people and people with disability were the primary direct participants in the training. With 83 families engaged in the project, the training and demonstration models developed have provided useful information and techniques for adoption across the whole community.
