Step one in PiCCA’s new partnership project with the Hako Women’s Collective (HWC) in Bougainville: 48 Rocket Stoves are all crated up and on a ship bound for Lae en route to  Buka.

This is the beginning of a small-scale trial exploring the viability of HWC running a broader social enterprise importing and on selling rocket stoves across the community. The ambition is to see if this activity might work to generate income to sustain HWC’s vital (and mostly unfunded) community services including its vital domestic violence respite and prevention work.

Added advantages of the fuel efficient rocket stoves include health outcomes through reduced smoke, environmental outcome through reduced use of wood, and empowerment outcomes through huge savings in time spent in timber getting and food preparation allowing for greater participation in skills development and other activities outside the home.
