PiCCA is hosting a Zoom webinar with Dr Serge Loode about the recent historical developments in the Autonomous Region of Bougainville and what Australia can learn from grassroots political dialogue in Bougainville.

Dr Loode will provide an overview and also his own perspective on the most recent political events in the ongoing peace process in Bougainville. In particular he will focus on the 2019 referendum on Bougainville’s future political status and the recent elections in September 2020 which have led to a new House of Representatives with more than 70% new members and the election of President Ishmael Toroama, a former commander of the Bougainville Revolutionary Army.

Dr Loode is the project leader of the Bougainville Transition Dialogues (BTD), a peacebuilding project designed to facilitate grassroots political dialogue in the village communities of Bougainville. His organisation, PaCSIA, has worked with the Autonomous Bougainville Government, the United Nations Development Programme and stakeholders from church and civil society in Bougainville since 2015 to support Bougainville’s peace process and the 2019 referendum. When not prohibited by COVID-19 travel restrictions, Serge and his team travel to Bougainville 3-5 times a year to connect with local stakeholders, including members of the Haku Women’s Collective supported by PICCA.

The aim of this Zoom webinar is to provide an update of recent events in Bougainville and to encourage an interactive discussion about what Australia can learn from grassroots political dialogue in Bougainville.
